Leytonstone De-rail Site
February 2020

Following the de-railing of a freight train at Leytonstone, the damaged section of line (over 3km in length) had to be removed and replaced. Working alongside Network Rail Works Delivery and IP teams CRSA, Smarttrax Rail were involved in producing and implementing a detailed plan to allow the track to be re-opened in the quickest possible time. The contract which was delivered through Capita SPG.

The two track site had ten waybeam bridges all of which had been damaged to some degree and all of which needed to be handed back as part of the renewal process.

Working in partnership with three separate Civil Engineering companies – Balfour Beatty, Murphy and Amco the implemented plan of track renewal was integrated with existing bridge repair plans.

Geometry files were produced by Smarttrax Rail to support the project along with the design for full stressing works.

Smarttrax ensured gauging was met through multiple platforms, multiple centre upright girders and longitudinal waybeams. As-built data was compiled from tamping and setting out for tamping.

Covering 70% of engineering resource and 40% of site supervision Smarttrax Rail played a key role in allowing the section of track to be re-opened at its scheduled time. A member Smarttrax Rail was the appointed CRE with track supplied by Smarttrax who also collated all the paperwork and liaised with NWR engineers and designers to ensure compliant installation and certified that the track was safe to re-open.

A daily reporting structure ensured shifts were updated with any changes as they happened and liaising directly with NWR management ensured a smooth delivery of the programme throughout.

The CRT register was updated and the 3km length of track was snagged and signed off by NWR with the project being delivered on time and on budget.
